11 Steps to Planning the Perfect Farm Birthday Party for Kids
Share
Choosing to host a farm themed birthday for your child is the cutest idea. It comes together exceptionally well with just a few simple steps, and looks as fun as it feels. The best part is there is the option of making it a super interactive and hands-on experience by adding a petting zoo so kids can really feel the barnyard experience and pet animals. It’s quite literally one of my favorite themes to execute when it comes to planning a kiddy birthday!
Here’s an overview of how to plan a successful ranch style birthday party.

Step 11: Prep Ahead For a Stress-Free Party
Now, let’s dive deeper into each step so you can execute this barnyard party to perfection.
Step 1: Pick Your Farm Party Venue

You have two options with this. The first is obviously a backyard setup. This makes a great affordable, budget-friendly option. I personally love home birthday parties because they always feel super personal and there’s a lot more autonomy and control involved as opposed to an external venue. You have the liberty to control things like set-up and timing.
The second option is hosting at either your local farm or petting zoo. This is a fantastic option if you want children to truly experience an interactive experience by spending time at the farm and getting very hands-on with the animals.
Step 2: Pick Your Farm Theme

When it comes to farm style birthdays. There are two main options to choose from. There’s the classic red barn which is gender neutral or if you want to make it exclusively for a girl's birthday, the pink barn style is very popular and looks super adorable.
It’s important to decide on this early on so that everything you choose after this step perfectly coordinates with your chosen theme. If you decide to do the classic red make sure that red is the highlight of everything from the invitations down to the decor and the same goes for the pink. This way you avoid having mismatched decor that looks all over the place.
Step 3: Send out Farm Invitations

This step is crucial so don’t miss it. I like to send out theme-based invitations to set the tone early and have my little guests eagerly anticipating the birthday from the moment they receive the invitation. For the most adorable farm birthday party invite choose a classic red barn farm invite or a pink one for an exclusively girl birthday look featuring farm animals and a tractor. Additionally, a good invite always includes all the necessary details so you or the guests don’t have to be in constant communication to confirm basic details.
Make sure the invite includes:
- Party date & time
- Location
- RSVPs
- Optional: Include dress code like overalls, plaid dresses and boots
Step 4: Decorate!

This is where the party gets super exciting. I’m going to share with you my tips on how you can easily transform your space into a mini barn. Always begin with the backdrop. I like to style farm themed parties with a barn backdrop. For the balloon arch, invest in a farm themed balloon arch so it frames the barn backdrop. Use farm animal cutouts, or large balloon animals to complete the look.
As for the tables, use rustic wooden tables or place matching checkered tablecloths. Wooden crates make an excellent choice as display stands or to fill with fruit and party favors.
Use hay bales (real or artificial) to accentuate the farm look. Here are a few suggestions on how you can meaningfully add them to your farm party so they don’t look random or messy. Your first option is to add them at the entrance with your “Welcome Sign”. Stack 2-3 hay bales with a wooden crate atop, filled with flowers or apples or pumpkins if it’s pumpkin season. The other option is adding them as an element to further enhance the farm themed backdrop. Stack them unevenly alongside the farm animals. Alternatively, they make a great seating choice for kids. Just make sure you couple them with a low table so it’s still convenient and accessible for children.
Finally, to take your party aesthetic from basic to professionally styled without spending big bucks, I recommend getting a printable barnyard party stationery bundle. They usually come with cute invitations, matching favor tags and cupcake toppers, welcome signs and birthday banners and so much more. These make the party setup look organized but also aesthetically pleasing thus, doubling as party decor so you don’t need to add many more elements. Here’s the perfect farm bundle to complement your party!

Step 5: Serve Farmer’s Menu

I love deciding themed party menus because the food is what brings all the joy to the table. Try giving a farm twist to your menu options. Here are some suggestions you’re going to absolutely love. I recommend using food labels to highlight your little farmer’s menu and placing them before each dish. If you’re using a printable farm bundle they usually come with food labels so just use those to complement your theme.
- Main Course: Rooster Bites (nuggets or tenders), Mac-a-Moo Cheese (Mac & Cheese), Old MacDonald’s Pizza (pizza)
- Party Snacks: Piggy Popcorn (Popcorn), Chicken Eggs (Kinder Eggs), Cowboy Cookies (Your favorite cookies), Garden Harvest Cups (fruit or veggie cups)
- Cake: Farm Friends Cake
- Drink: Berry Barn Juice (Fruit punch), Moo Moo Milk (Mini Milk Bottles), Barnyard Spring Water (mini water bottles)
Don't forget to check out these cute food labels!

Step 6: Plan Farm Games and Activities

No kid party is complete without games and activities. These are what make the party entertaining and memorable because after all kids interact and connect through play. So to make the party meaningful games are an absolute must!
Since it’s a birthday and there’s so many other things happening make it different to a play-date. I recommend choosing games that are simple and don’t take too long. This way you can easily spread them out into your schedule without having to worry about time constraints.
I love the following games for a farm themed party. And the best part is that each of these games can be executed with minimal materials and planning.
- Pin the Tail on the Donkey: This is an incredibly fun game to include at a birthday party. Print a large donkey poster and hang at kid’s eye level. Give each child a ribbon or tape and make children stand in line. The child that pins the tail must be blind-folded as they pin the tail. Label the tail with the child’s name. The child who gets closest to the correct spot wins.
- Sack races: You’ll just need sacks for this. Mark a start and finish line. If there’s less space or not enough sacks just make kids go in groups of 4 for example. That way you also have a crowd to cheer which adds to the excitement. Give each child a sack, they need to hold the top of their sacks with both hands. After the “Go” signal, kids race and the first to complete the race wins. To make the game more complicated for slightly older kids, use hay bales or cones as obstacles so they have to hop around the hay or through the cones. The most important thing to look out for is that the path is clear and isn’t rocky or slippery, to prevent injuries.
- Feed-the-Animal Toss Game: You can buy one that’s already done for you or you could simply just get a large poster board, print a farm animal face and cut around the mouth. Place the board upright and have children stand in a line 3-6 feet away depending on age. Kids aim at the mouth. Give each child 3-5 items to toss, like carrots and corn so it really feels like they are feeding the animal. The child that feeds the most food wins (it must go through the mouth).
Step 7: Create Simple Party Favors

Party favors are a fantastic way to say “thank you” to your little guests for celebrating with you. I always recommend keeping favors simple yet meaningful. I’ve seen a lot of parents buy bulk bags of party favors off Amazon. I really don’t recommend those simply because they feel rather messy and they are a nuisance to clean up (I say that as a parent!). Instead, opt for favors that feel thoughtful and useful.
Here are some of my recommendations:
- Mini Stuffed Farm Animals with A Small Bag of Treats: These make super cute favors without feeling messy and who doesn’t love candy and a cuddly toy?
- Farmer Kits: You can simply make these yourself by including a toy tractor and sachet of planting seeds. So creative and fun too!
- Mini Barn Decorating Kit: Parents love these types of gifts. It keeps kids busy and entertained and what better way is there to complement your farm theme than a mini barn.
Make your favors look extra special with a "Thank You" favor tag.

Step 8: Add a “Surprise” Moment

This one’s entirely optional but if you’re hosting at home and willing to take your farm party to the next level booking a petting zoo experience would be it. If this suits your budget, inviting a petting zoo to your home would give the children the most immersive and unforgettable farm experience. But don’t forget that this is a complement and not a must. You can still pull off an amazing ranch style party without having live animals visit your place!
Step 9: Sample Party timeline
It’s easy to ignore a party schedule. But in the moment you realize how quickly things can fall apart and go south when there’s zero structure. To avoid unnecessary stress and chaos stick to a schedule so everything runs smoothly and according to plan.
Here’s an easy 2-hour structure:
- 0:00–0:20: Arrival & free play
- 0:20–0:50: Games (Pin the Tail on the Donkey + Sack Race)
- 0:50–1:20: Food Time
- 1:20–1:40: Cake & Happy Birthday Song
- 1:40–2:00: Handout favors & Final goodbyes
Step 10: Create a Photo Booth
I always like to have a designated photo booth so that parents can take pictures with their little ones. Now, you don’t need to create any additional space; instead I like to make the backdrop the center of attention. If that’s the star of the decor you can easily double that space as a photo booth–honestly there’s no better place. Just add props like pitchforks and cowboy hats and that’s literally it.
Step 11: Prep Ahead For a Stress-Free Party
If you truly want to be stress-free on the day of the party I highly recommend planning ahead and doing tasks ahead of time and in an orderly sequence. That way you get everything done in time and there’s no room for chaos and error.
- 2-3 months before: set a budget, decide on a venue, make a guest list and choose your farm style.
- 1 month before: Book any vendors, send out invitations, order party decor and cake, plan games and menu, and follow up-on RSVPs.
- 1 week before: Buy non-perishable food and drinks, serving-ware and tableware, finalize party outfits and clean house (indoors & outdoors).
- Day before: Prep or cook food, chill drinks, assemble party favors, set up tables and chairs and hang decorations.
- Day of: Pick up cake, charge phones and cameras, and set up food and drinks!
