Step 1: Pick Your Unicorn Party Theme Style and Magical Color Palette

This is the first step and most important step to set the perfect foundation of your unicorn themed party. The reason I like to decide on the style and palette before moving on to what seem to be the more important things is because you'll base everything on these two things– making everything look cohesive and professional. From the invitations down to the paper plates everything should be from your chosen color palette. That’s how you get that gorgeous magical look.

Unicorn theme styles and color palettes:

  • Pastel Rainbow Unicorn: This style is the most popular theme when it comes to unicorn parties. It’s dreamy, soft and colorful with pink, lavender, mint, baby blue and pale yellow tones.
  • Magical Unicorn: This unicorn style is shimmery and glamorous for kids who want the party to feel super fancy and sparkly. If this is your kind of thing, focus on pink and white and add gold or silver elements for the magical effect.
  • Boho Unicorn: This style is more natural combined with florals. It's both whimsical and trendy. To achieve this more modern take on a unicorn birthday party stick to blush, beige, dusty rose and sage green. Don't forget to include floral, woody and macrame elements into the decor for that unique boho touch.
  • Candyland Unicorn: This style is bright and fun. Focus on bold pinks, purples, blues and rainbow tones to achieve that bright, playful and sugary sweet vibe. Don't forget to add candy props and bright balloon installations to this vibrant unicorn style.

Step 2: Send out Dreamy Unicorn Invitations

Choose a unicorn invitation that matches your unicorn style. There are so many options to choose from you’re sure to find one that perfectly complements your chosen look. Just make sure it’s editable and personalizable. A good invitation has all the necessary details that guests need so they don’t need to go back and forth with you to confirm unanswered details like:

  • Party time and date
  • Location
  • RSVP details
  • A fun line like: “Join us for a magical unicorn adventure!”
  • Optional: Add “Dress in your favorite unicorn colors or sparkles!” to get kids excited.

Step 3: Decorate!

If you’re aiming for a magical look don’t neglect the entrance. That’s what is going to make all the difference. Start by adding a magical ‘Unicorn Welcome Sign’. If you’re going for a magical look add a shimmery backdrop or a bright, colorful one for candyland unicorn theme behind the balloon arch. This will instantly transform the space into a dreamy unicorn world. Then, you’re going to focus on the cake table. This is where you’re going to make that magical unicorn dream cake pop. Add props that go with your chosen style and stick to the color palette. Add unicorn centerpieces, foil balloons, and balloon garlands that match your chosen style. Don’t neglect matching tablecloths– I personally like solid colors so if you are doing a pastel unicorn theme stick to pastel colored tablecloths or a shimmery one for the magical, glamorous unicorn look. For the boho look, a rustic wooden table looks best. Now, for the props, stick to florals and macrame elements for a boho unicorn birthday, add large bright candy balloon props especially where the balloon arch is fixed and for a pastel unicorn party add cotton candy “clouds” or tulle for that soft, dreamy finish.

I love finishing my decor at the children’s seating table/s. You won’t be doing anything new here, just make sure it’s consistent with the backdrop and the cake table. That way everything ties in together and automatically looks professionally styled.

If you really want to add that extra professional touch that looks like the ones you find on TikTok and Instagram reels you can’t go past matching party printables. These really elevate the party aesthetic. I prefer getting a bundle because it makes everything look seamless and coordinated. These usually include everything from invitations to welcome signs, favor tags and cupcake toppers, birthday banners and so much more. All you need to do is personalize and print! Here is a super dreamy printable Unicorn Party Bundle.

Step 4: Serve Easy Unicorn Themed Party Food

Making the birthday menu themed is surprisingly easier than you thought. By adding slight changes to the colors, serving ware and creative unicorn themed names and labels to each component of the menu you will instantly transform everyday food to a dreamy unicorn feast.

Main Course: Rainbow Slice Pizza, Enchanted Chicken Bites (chicken nuggets or tenders), Golden Unicorn Mac & Cheese Cups (mac & cheese served in colorful cups)

Party Snacks: Fluffy Cloud Popcorn (Popcorn drizzled with white chocolate), Rainbow Fruit Wands (fruit skewers), Unicorn Pretzel Twists (pretzels dipped in pastel-colored chocolate)

Cake: The Magical Unicorn Cake (centerpiece cake), Unicorn Dream Cupcakes (vanilla or birthday cupcakes with pastel rainbow frosting)

Drink: Unicorn Potion Juice (Pink lemonade or fruit punch), Sparkling Fairy Water (water bottles wrapped in unicorn labels)

Step 5: Plan Fun Unicorn Party Games and Activities

This is very well going to be the highlight of the party. Kids love to play and create and these ideas offer a bit of both. They are sure to delight your little guests and make the party is extra magical. The best part is they’ll even have something to take home.

Pin the Horn On the Unicorn: This is an incredibly fun game to include at a birthday party. Print a large unicorn poster and hang at kid’s eye level. Give each child a unicorn-shaped paper or cardboard cutout and make children stand in line. The child that pins the unicorn must be blind-folded as they pin the unicorn. Label the unicorn with the child’s name. The child who gets closest to the correct spot wins.

Unicorn Treasure Hunt: This is both an indoor and outdoor friendly game and requires minimal prep. All you’ll need to do is hide unicorn horns, mini glitter jars and pastel or gold plastic eggs filled with candy and unicorn stickers.

Unicorn Craft Station: Here’s another perfect activity to add to your unicorn party. Set up a craft station with DIY unicorn masks, unicorn coloring pages and unicorn sticker decorating. Adding this is a must because after so much high-energy and interactive play this allows parents to take a step back and breath while kids enjoy a calm, yet fun crafting experience. Once completed, the unicorn masks will double as photo props. Use the magical unicorn mask creations to capture dreamy unicorn moments.

Step 6: Create Simple Party Favors

Unicorn Party Favors don’t have to be complicated. Just make sure it’s something useful and parents are able to appreciate it rather than discreetly despise it. We’ve all been there where our kids came home with a bag of meaningless trash so to say. Instead opt for fewer but more meaningful items so that everyone’s happy at the end of the day.

Here’s my list of favors I find easy to source, and special enough for a unicorn party:

  • Mini unicorn toys
  • Mini unicorn craft kits
  • Unicorn coloring booklets with a pack of crayons
  • Bubbles
  • No-mess unicorn slime

To make the party favors look extra magical, package everything in pastel or iridescent favor bags and use matching unicorn favor tags. Check these whimsical unicorn favor tags!

Step 7: Create a Unicorn Photo Booth

Photo booths create the perfect dynamics for lots of laughter, fun and memorable moments. There’s no need to create a separate photo booth when you already have a magical unicorn set up. I suggest doubling the backdrop and balloon arch as the photo booth. Just add props like horns, wings, and wands and the unicorn mask craft creations to capture lots of fun and magical pictures.

Step 8: Add a “Magical” Moment

Adding a small addition to the party just before serving the cake would take your average unicorn birthday party to the next level, making it a true unicorn dream. Kids would be delighted at this unexpected surprise. There are a few options you could use to inexpensively create that “magical” effect.

Magical unicorn surprise, use:

  • Bubble machine for a fun, playful surprise
  • Confetti or glitter pop as a “unicorn dust” reveal
  • Surprise unicorn visit

Step 9: Sample Party Timeline

When it comes to party planning I recommend having a timeline so that everything is structured and flows through smoothly. That way I can enjoy myself as the host and not have to worry about feeling stressed out when things get chaotic. Instead I can be sure that we’ll get through all the planned activities efficiently.

  • 0:00–0:20: Guest arrival & free play
  • 0:20–0:50: Games & activities (Pin the horn on the unicorn or unicorn treasure hunt)
  • 0:50–1:10: Food time
  • 1:10–1:25: Cake & Happy Birthday Song
  • 1:25–1:45: Crafts / calm play
  • 1:45–2:00: Favors & goodbye

Step 10: Prep Ahead For a Stress-Free Party

If you truly want to be stress-free on the day of the party I highly recommend planning ahead and doing tasks ahead of time and in an orderly sequence. That way you get everything done in time and there’s no room for chaos and error.

  • 2-3 months before: set a budget, decide on a venue, make a guest list and choose a unicorn style.
  • 1 month before: Book any vendors, send out invitations, order party decor and cake, plan games and menu, and follow up-on RSVPs.
  • 1 week before: Buy non-perishable food and drinks, serving-ware and tableware, finalize party outfits and clean house (indoors & outdoors).
  • Day before: Prep or cook food, chill drinks, assemble party favors, set up tables and chairs and hang decorations.
  • Day of: Pick up cake, charge phones and cameras, and set up food and drinks!
